I am at the Northern Voice kickoff here in Vancouver, B.C. The day

started at around 8am with a brief introduction, and name registration.

Day One - Friday - 10th - 2006

I will post video from the first session I attended with Michael Tippett of NowPublic.

Mike gives a nice presentation of the New V3 version of NowPublic...

NowPublic - NPV3 - so many cool tools to play with, and now it is even easier to report from anywhere in the world...

And post additional photo's as well as report's from the days events...

I am now in a session entilted, Blogging and the Future of (the?) Media...

Kurt Cagle

Pictured by clicking the above link opened this session by talking about the
writings of Marshall McLuhan, and where we are today in regard to who
owns, profits, and disseminates the information and media we use and take in everyday.

I like the point that is being made that the control mechanism(s), which
has kept information underwraps has been opened wide with our current
techological interaction and construction.

Cost is very low in regard to building and sharing information.

This is allowing for people to compete with the print media. The markets are
changing, and advertising models are changing as the youth movement
removes itself from old models...

Now - I am in the Online Community Building with Blogs Session...

This is a very different group set up. Instead of the usual one or two
speaker
system. The whole room is filled with community members in a large
circle. Everyone is being asked to answer "What community means to
them," and then a story about their blogging experience within their
own community...

This is a very unformal session, which is leading to a good disscussion...

RSS is a big part of this talk, because people are using RSS to more easily connect communities...

People are on-line community building today, and many bloggers meet people
from all over the world, and beyond speaking on-line are building
networks, which end in face to face meetings across the world.

New tool creation for on-line community building is a growing issue..

RSS- Real Simple Syndication

Marshall McLuhan has been used again in a story about blogging connection and
how
easily it is to work with people who know other people who have written
or spoken about information one may want to gain more accessibilty with
or in.

Conversational Media - How does the blogging community create such a media dynamic..

Blogging is the catalyst for this media transformation.

A
interesting workshop, but it did lose the ability to be concise,
becasue everyone covered many different topics... The idea of
Conversational Media seems like an interesting topic to look into
further...

The next session is entitled,

User-centric identity options for community and web 2.0 apps.

Digital Idenity and Identifier's

When a person goes to login to their site they are required to use a password.

If
you go to more than one site or many sites you are having to login with
many different passwords/usernames ect... The problem is that many of
us have many sites we use and lots fo information...

This
session is looking to the future of login identity. And actually
changing the dynamic into a URL based identity (A Decentralized system-
one which is being supported by Microsoft).

MicroSoft is developing a card system, or a info card system.

Skip is developing - Identity 2.0/ The Score Project www.score.com - New

BETA
which will be up next week... This project is working to develop an
identity system that will help bloggers on their site with spam, and
idenity issues.

A good question being asked - Why change from http? Why build this entire system and a entirely new protocol?

Check out WikiURI for some suggested answers to these questions...

We wrapped up the first day with some disscussion about the overall
day, and whether or not there was enough emphasis on building social
networks, which would allow bloggers to go beyond their normal roles,
and into the realm of social action.

Day 2 - Saturday - February/11th, 2006

I am back at UBC Robson Square. A exciting day ahead for the final
Day of what has been a very full-filling week here at Robson Square.

A large crowd is in attendance here today. The opening presentations are complete, and the day's schedule is ready to go forward. People are chatting over coffee and
snacks as the day's speakers make their last minute preparations.

First up for me will be The Changing Face of Journalism

Presented by: Mark Schneider, Robert Ouimet and Michael Tippett

A quick note - Another reporter - Conneticutkati has been posting photo's from the event ...

We have a packed house in Room 130. There is not a open swivel

chair in the room... Michael Tippett is doing the introduction.

The Topic for Today will focus on... How is News Changing? What Does this mean?

Consumption - Readers are now going on-line...

The Market has shifted away from Large Media Corporations.

The

Biggest Difference and Advantage is "our numbers." "The people"

have the ability to change the landscape. Numerical Superiority

has helped change the media landscape. It started with cable

news, and has moved to citizen journalism.

Digg has now taken over CBS News/NBC in terms of traffic.

"We Own the News."

3 Major Events in the last 18months, which have helped accelerate this process..

Asia -- The Tsunami

London Bombings

Katrina - Hurricane - NowPublic had 2000 reporters in the area.

Robert Ouimet now has taken the floor.

Self proclaimed, "Old Guy"

Robert used to be a reporter/working journalists for the CBC

He is talking to the days of Radio - Landmark moment

Today the landmark moment or "profound moment" is happening in this room.

The example given was how many people in the room today who are transmitting information and collecting information .

The

Ipod is also a good example of how content consumption is a part of

everyone's day. You plug it in at night and then in the morning

it is packed with information.

Up next is Mark Schneider (a professor at Simon Frasier University)

Mark was a "hack journalist," "Maybe We Should Invite the Barbarians In"

"The News is Sick, and in many ways it makes us sick."

The News plays to our human love of violence and fear.

News should help a citizen be a citizen.

Most people do not trust the mainstream news anymore, and the poll numbers proof this today.

A question session is now starting in the room.

What is the role of the Editor?

Focusing attention towards needed structure.

Mike

replied that Editor's only have so much access and information.

Why not let everyone be Editor's and the content can be Judged on its

own merits.

Filters will be important to understanding this large influx of information...

Mark - "We have always been attracted to Intelligence and Creativity"...

Is the fracture in the media due to the polarization of the right, and the left in the West?

The Political bloggers are linking more to each side. More than any other group on-line...

Great Session.
