Riots in Denmark

For the third time in less than a year, residents of the Nørrebro neighbourhood spent a night watching a riot erupt outside their homes Saturday.

The dramatic events unfolded after police responded to reports of fires being lit in the streets by anarchists attending a rally commemorating the six-month anniversary of the demolition of the Ungdomshuset youth centre, their former gathering place.

As police clad in riot gear moved in on the group of 1000 protestors gathered at the intersection of the Nørrebrogade high street and Jagtvej road, an all-too-familiar pattern emerged: a salvo of tear gas fired to disperse the crowd was met with a hail of cobblestones. The ensuing wave of violence left shops along Nørrebrogade with shattered windows, blackened facades and looted shelves.
