Robson Street Safeway is Going Away
According to my checkout clerk this evening, the Safeway on Robson at Denman is closing its doors this Saturday after being in limbo for 15 years.
I remember when the liquor store across the parking lot shut down, that was when the old building was slated to be demolished and a new super-Safeway was to be rebuilt on the same corner. The clerk today said that about half of the employees will head over to the Davie Street location but those who commute in, from as far as South Surrey, will probably be looking elsewhere for work. After years of disputes and red tape, the West End is losing one of its main grocery hubs. Where will we get our food stuffs now?
Let's look at the options downtown (handy Google map of all locations is also available)
It'll be a while until the new fancy Safeway on Robson and Denman is in place, but hopefully it's worth the wait. I'm sure we'll all pretty tired of the cracked floors, ancient shelving units, and produce that's been sitting there since the store was originally going to shut down in the early 90s.
If you have any more grocery shopping suggestions to add to my list, please leave a comment. I need to find a new place close by to get old fashioned chunky peanut butter since I don't think they have any at the market.

Great proactive coverage: not just reporting a problem, but also solutions.

Good news: Safeway on Robson now open. It is huge. Bright. Easy to navigate. Lots of variety. The grand opening was on December 19, 2008. They even have 4 self-serve checkout stands. Very easy to use. They have easy access to shoppers of all ages such as a moving sidewalk to take you to the store which is on the second floor as the first floor is the parking and several retail stores (the stores are not open yet). Or you can take a very large elevator that is right next to the parking and main entrance. They also have the new compact 2-level shopping carts that are easy to maneuvre. The Aisles are much larger and well lit. I forgot my glasses at home, but I was pleasantly surprised that I could read (though fuzzy) the signs in the aisles. They used a good contrast of light lettering on dark background. You have to see this for yourself. This is the future of grocery shopping. As for the prices - a bit high. If you want the low prices with most of what the new Safeway is like (brightness, cleanliness, choice, lots of checkout stands etc), they try "No Frills" at Denman Mall (on Denman Street). Yes this comment is long, but I was impressed with the new store. I am glad they are back.
