Manchester United star Ronaldo is hanging on for five more years. The 22-year-old football star--who started playing pro at 16--is fast filling the footsteps of the man he was called in to replace only a few short years ago, Real Madrid star David Beckham. Beckham, now 31, played his first pro match with the Red Devils at 17.

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo signed a five-year contract Friday to stay at Old Trafford through till 2012.

The 22-year-old Portugal international is set to earn a reported 120,000 pounds (C$270,980) per week, according to London newspaper Evening Standard.

"I am delighted," Ronaldo said. "I spoke with Sir Alex (Ferguson) and David Gill about my future and everyone knew that I wanted to stay. I am very happy at the club and I want to win trophies, and hopefully we will do that this season."
