A New York Times review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that went up online overnight has been blasted by Potter author JK Rowling.

Rowling, who has amassed a personal fortune from her popular tales of the boy wizard, responded in a terse statement.

"I am staggered that some American newspapers have decided to publish purported spoilers in the form of reviews in complete disregard of the wishes of literally millions of readers, particularly children," she said.

Rowling's anger is justified: there have been no advance copies of the book sent to reviewers, and Kakutani says she bought her book at a New York area bookstore. Stores are not supposed to begin selling the book until midnight this Saturday, but some stores, particularly in the US, are breaking those rules in order to meet the demands of rabid fans.

I wonder to what extent advance sales are driven by fans who simply don't want to hear about the ending second-hand.
