A wrecking ball has smashed more than a dozen cars after it broke loose from a crane cable and raced downhill.

The 1,500lb (680kg) demolition device bounced into vehicles and injured three people before coming to rest in the boot of a car in the US.

The wrecking ball, measuring about three feet across, was being used to demolish part of a library at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, when its cable snapped.

A crane operator tried to stop the heavy lump of metal from moving.

But it rolled nearly three-quarters of a mile downhill, hitting cars as it rebounded from curb to curb.
