Update July 27th 2007 -

Shambo the temple bullock has been slaughtered, it was confirmed today. The six-year-old Friesian, which tested positive for bovine tuberculosis, was put down following a three-month fight by members of a Hindu community to keep him alive.

The row over Shambo's future reached a climax yesterday when officials entered the Skanda Vale community in Llanpumsaint, west Wales, and took him away.

July 26th 2007 -

The court decision allowing a sacred bull in Wales to live has been overturned, so Shambo will be slaughtered Thursday, the animal's keepers said Wednesday.

The six-year-old black Friesian bull, revered by Hindu monks at the Skanda Vale community in southwest Wales, was diagnosed in April with bovine tuberculosis. Regulations stipulate that cattle suspected of carrying TB be destroyed.

More than 20,000 people joined an online campaign to save the infected bull, saying the proposed slaughter would violate sacred religious principles.

A more pressing, at least for Shambo, clash between Religion and Science. Should religious faith be held in higher regard than health regulations? Does medicine trump faith?

This is a fantastic post. If it were up to me (as southeastern Welsh health policy most certainly is not), I'd rather protect the public health by killing the bull than rely on faith to carry a community through a tuberculosis crisis. Having said that, killing one creature to  ease the lives of surrounding creatures is a very slippery slope. Thanks for making me think!

I think that public health wins over faith and/or politics, but  it is surprising (to me) when confronted with deeply held convictions to the contrary. Faith is a powerful thing.
