Saddam's Daughter Now Faces Possible Death Penalty

I am vehemently anti-death-penalty, and I see little point in executing this woman, no matter whether she's the daughter of a former tyrant or not. What will it achieve? Executing Saddam himself acheived very little, in my opinion.

Less than a year after her father was sent to the gallows, Saddam Hussein's daughter is facing charges that could lead to her execution.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior said Friday that Raghad Hussein, 38, has been charged with financing the insurgents who have bedeviled this country since shortly after her father's regime was toppled in 2003.

Hussein is believed to be living in Amman, Jordan, as a guest of King Abdullah II.

good stuff:

Thanks for posting this, general. Yeah, it's not immediately obvious how an execution will stop the fighting in what is clearly an active war zone.

Absolutely., Jordan. In fact, little at the moment can stop the fighting in that war zone but that's a different matter.

But going through with the execution would do nothing to help the situaton in the Middle East.

generaldecay, thanks for this. I am against the death penalty as well, as I feel it is a short term solution to a longer term problem. It usually satiates the general public's bloodlust without having any real purpose beyond that. In this case, I'm sure the push is just to take out Saddam's blood line, something started with Saddam's sons and carried through to his daughter. Pointless and scary stuff.

Kaitlin, thank you for your comment (and the add).

I agree that the death penalty can sate the public's need for revenge to some extent but it's a very temporary and tenous effect. (And I don't think by any means that it justifies its use.)

I think you could be right about just taking out Saddam's bloodline. It's a very brutal and blind approach, but rather typical of how things have gone in the Middle East for the last five years.

Me too. I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for further stories (and I shall post them here). This piece is the first I've heard of this.
