Samba School "Beija-FLor" wins 1st Place in Rio's Carnival

The carnival parade in Rio de Janeio, Brazil, puts the whole country to
samba, in particular, samba schools, communities that prepare all year
long for the next carnival. Creativity, beauty, choreography and
personalities are among the criteria for which a samba school is
judged. This year "Beija-Flor" (Humming Bird) came in first place
with a perfect score of ten. Their school's parade presented the
story of South Africa. Beija-Flor presented floats on racism, the
struggle for independence and Nelson Mandela and African mothers who
immigrated with their sons to Brazil. Their ground "alas" (wings,
a group of dancers or band) represented African animals, blood from
South Africa's suffering and the African kingdom of Daome.
