Although Philippines Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo was in Los Angeles for just one day last week he made time in his busy schedule to learn about a human rights education initiative that originated in Southern California.
Because of the importance he places on human rights, Saludo met with Eden Stein, President of the
Church of Scientology of Pasadena, who presented him with a set of Public Service Announcements on behalf of
Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI).
YHRI is an independent non-profit corporation headquartered in Los Angeles that educates people in the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights so they become valuable advocates for tolerance and peace.
Ms. Stein,a Filipino American, is an ardent supporter of Youth for Human Rights International. She not only sponsors a YRHI chapter in Pasadena, but last year she accompanied the Youth for Human Rights World Tour when it visited the Philippines, to help bring the program to the attention of local officials.
Saludo and Stein discussed the current state of human rights in the Philippines and the work being done to improve conditions in the country. Stein also met with Philippine Consul General Mary Jo Bernardo-Aragon and presented her with a DVD containing a set of the Public Service Announcements YHRI produced and distributes to educate people of all ages on the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Stein briefed the Consul General on the YHRI campaign with statistics and results from all countries involved, including the Philippines, where the PSAs are currently showing in Manila. Released in 2006, more than 300 million people have watched these PSAs to date.
