Portugal, newcomers to the Rugby World Cup, found themselves on the receiving end of Scotland's offense. Portugal was limited to a single penalty goal as the Scots dominated the match.

Scotland laid down a marker by running in eight tries against World Cup
debutants Portugal in an entertaining 56-10 Pool C victory.

There will be tougher tests to come for Frank Hadden's men, but they
showed they will be a force to be reckoned with on this showing,
although admittedly it was against limited opposition.[/q]

Portuguese were playing their Cup final and we always knew it was going
to be awkward for us and so it proved and we had to work extremely hard
for the win," Scotland coach Frank Hadden said.

"It wasn't slick but they are a lot of positive aspects to come out
of it and we will continue to make progress as the tournament goes on."

Portugal's players were afforded a fine reception by the big crowd.

"I'm very proud of the way we played today, the players all tried
very hard and we wanted to put on a good show at our first World Cup,"
Portugal coach Tomaz Morais said.[/q]

overcame a gallant Portuguese side packed with amateurs with a 56-10
win in their World Cup Pool C game on Sunday.

After a dismal Six Nations where they ended with the wooden spoon, the Scots were in need of a confidence-building win.

They scored eight tries, including a two at the start by fullback
Rory Lamont, all converted by Dan Parks (five) and Chris Paterson
(three), but their performance was a little tarnished by some sloppy
handling.

The Portuguese "Lobos" (Wolves) celebrated their first appearance in
the World Cup when they scored a try on the half-hour by wing Pedro
Carvalho. Scrumhalf Jose Pinto added the conversion and a penalty.[/q]

Next match, Portugal plays tournament favorites New Zealand...

The hard, hard numbers.

Yes, I wish I were attending these matches.
No, I'm not sitting at the pub with my laptop, but that's not a bad assumption. It's slightly early to begin drinking, and I'm at work.
