The 21st World Scout Jamboree will be hosted by the Scout Association
of the United Kingdom from July 27 until August 8, 2007. It will bring
together 40,000 Scouts, Venturers, leaders, and staff for 12 days. They
will share adventure, international friendship, personal growth, and
development.

In 2007, the centennial year of the founding of the Scouting
movement, the jamboree theme will be "One World, One Promise." Sir
Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Scouting program, also pioneered
the very first jamboree at Olympia in London in 1920.

The Boy Scouts of America participated with 301 Scouts and leaders
at the First World Scout Jamboree, and 3,200 American Scouts/leaders
are invited to return to the birthplace of Scouting during the summer
of 2007.

Scouts begin 100-year celebrations

Sunday, 29 July 2007 10:23

Irish scouts are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the scouting movement worldwide.

Hundreds of members of the Irish National Scout Association are taking part in special events starting today at the National Campsite in Larch Hill, Dublin.

Others have travelled to participate in the World Scout Jamboree which is being held in London this weekend.

BACKGROUND

Scouting rapidly spread around the world after the first
experimental camp in 1907 on Brownsea
Island. Scouting’s Founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell
planned to hold a special event to bring together Scouts of all nationalities,
and to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the camp on
Brownsea Island.

Due to the First World War, where many Scouts were killed, the firstinternational gathering of Scouts was held in 1920. This, the first Jamboree, was held at London’s Olympia for 8,000 Scouts from 34 Countries.

Baden-Powell chose the name ‘Jamboree’ for this event, based on the common Swahili greeting ‘Jambo’ meaning ‘Hello’. Jamboree is now an international term used to describe a large gathering of Scouts. Since 1920, World Scout Jamborees have been held almost every four years, except during the Second World War, and hosted all over the world. The 21st World Scout Jamboree will help mark the Centenary of Scouting, with over 40,000 Scouts attending from almost every
country in the world.

Where Is the Jamboree?

The 21st World Scout Jamboree will take place at Hylands Park, Chelmsford,
England. It is within easy reach of both central London and the airports
surrounding London.

  • Hylands Park is a large area of rolling green parkland, with
patches of woodland and an English country house. It offers an ideal location
    for the jamboree site.
  • Chelmsford is a local town and has a history stretching back
thousands of years. Chelmsford Borough Council owns Hylands Park and is strongly
    supporting the jamboree.
  • Gilwell Park is the home of Scouting in the UK and is close
to both Hylands Park and London. It will be the focus of adventurous activities
in the Gilwell Adventure, which is one of the jamboree program venues.
  • The United Kingdom is a diverse and multicultural society
that combines tradition with high technology. The UK has the honor of being the
country where Sir Robert Baden-Powell founded Scouting. His first experiment was
with an encampment on Brownsea Island in 1907 with 22 Scouts from the London
    area.
