NP Rank:
Scritti Politti's Triumphant Return
Over two decades since panic attacks led him to cancel a sold-out tour and vow never to play live again, Green Gartside has relaunched Scritti Politti as a going live concern.
Just eight months after testing the water with an ultra small scale secret comeback show, Green and the gang have toured the world, released a new Mercury Prize nominated album and, on Sunday, played their biggest headline show to date.
Drawing heavily from his current ‘White Bread Black Beer’ long player, the now 50 year old Green managed to charm the devotional audience with a voice as sweetly beautiful as it ever was, the aural equivalent of white chocolate.
A selection of true pop gems such as ‘The “Sweetest” Girl’, ‘Wood Beez’ and ‘Skank Bloc Bologna’ peppered the set as Green drew from (whisper it) four decades of hits, many never before played live, with the night finally ending with a real sense of joy and warmth amongst the crowd, happy that the lost boy has at last returned.
It wasn’t easy being Green, but everything’s alright now.
