Last year, Queen Anne resident Alex Welles ended up saving a woman's
life when she slipped and started to slide down a hill during a
Himalayan climb (see "Mountain misadventures: QA man's Nepalese hike
turns 'dicey'," June 15, 2005 at www.Magnolia-News.net).

This year, Welles went back to the world's tallest mountains with a group organized by the Queen Anne-based Mountaineers Club.

Although
Welles didn't end up saving anyone's life this time, he did have to
deal with Nepalese Maoist guerrillas, a humorless bunch who demanded
bribes not just once but twice, he said.
