Being severely ill is no excuse for a government handout. That was the message the Pierce family essentially received from Centrelink, when it deemed Matthew Pierce, a 16 year-old with leukaemia, to be ineligible for a disability support pension. In its bureaucratic wisdom, Centrelink concluded Matthew was ineligible on the basis that his leukaemia was a temporary condition.
