NP Rank:
Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
This is one of the most inspiring photos NowPublic has ever received. Click on it to see it full size.
It comes from a new NP member who goes by the handle of Dr. Zhivago. I have no idea who he or she is, but given the orbit of the comet, its relationship to the sun, it's obvious this shot came from the southern hemisphere.
Even though Dr. Zhivago did not include any information in the caption of this photograph, it is evident by the title s/he chose - "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" - this is a person of poetry and intelligence.
It has been an amazing experience to see the range of photographs our members have sent in. You can have a look at some of these here and here.
For all those who still remail skeptical about "citizen journalism" or as we prefer to call it, crowd-powered media, please have a look at the slide show of all the photographs we have received.
Have a look at the gripping images our members contributed as the terrible storm Kyrill.
And after you have finished, try to imagine how professional photojournalists working for the most powerful news organizations might have done better. It defies the imagination, just as thoroughly as Dr. Zhivago has inspired ours.

Thanks for the story behind the photo. It was actually taken in Valdivia,Chile (southern hemisphere as you noticed) at 22:58pm on 18/1/07 (local time), minutes before the comet sunk on the horizon. We were lucky to get that view as Valdivia is one of the rainiest cities in Chile and we had clear skies for a few days.
The photos from around the world are amazing! thanks everyone for posting them.
