SF Snowboard & Ski Event Soars High: Luckily There was a Net
"The only hitch seemed to be the main event. Early on,
the man-made snow -- actually more like a giant Slurpee -- caused some
problems: It didn't provide enough speed for the athletes on the in-run
to get enough lift to sail over the transition area and onto the sloped
landing area.
The conditions actually caused the women
snowboarders to cancel their portion of the show after Bev Vuilleumiere
of Incline Village, Nev., fell just before hitting the jump and
disappeared into the gap between the kicker lip and transition area.
Luckily, a net, which was strung in the morning, kept her from
plummeting some 60 feet to the ground."
