'Shrek' Opens Big

The big green demi-Scottish ogre has proven his staying power, bringing in the biggest-ever box office numbers for an animated premiere.

DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek the Third" bowed over the weekend as the biggest animated opening ever, with $122 million from 4,122 theaters.

Pic hit $122.9 million including some limited Thursday runs.

"Shrek"'s three-day total also made its mark as the third biggest opening weekend ever, according to studio estimates on Sunday morning.

"Spider-Man 3" settled for second place behind the green guy in his third frame, bringing the pic's domestic cume to $281.8 million. Pic slipped 51% in ticket sales from the previous weekend.
