EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. The space shuttle Discovery is scheduled to be bolted to a modified Boeing 7-47 today, the final step before the spacecraft is ferried to Florida.
The mating process is expected to take about eight hours and the trip to the east coast could begin tomorrow morning.

Update:
Space Shuttle Discovery Scheduled To Begin Flight Home Thursday Morning
It was scheduled to go back to Florida Wednesday, but bad weather
forced technicians to suspend inspections and preparation all day
Monday, therefore postponing its homecoming to Thursday morning.

tentatively scheduled to leave California on Friday, more than a week
after it was diverted to the Mojave Desert in the first shuttle flight
since the Columbia accident.
Discovery's
cross-country ferry to Cape Canaveral, Fla., expected to cost NASA at
least $1 million, has been postponed twice this week due to bad weather
and technical glitches.

Space Shuttle Discovery rode piggyback atop a jumbo jet headed for
Florida Friday, more than a week after being diverted to the Mojave
Desert for the first landing shuttle since the Columbia tragedy.
NASA's coverage of Discovery's return home:
After a re-fueling stopover at the Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma,
Space Shuttle Discovery and the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft arrived safely
at Barksdale AFB, La., at 6:40 p.m. EDT. Discovery will remain
overnight and is scheduled for a mid-morning departure tomorrow. The
final leg of the orbiter's journey is expected to conclude with its
arrival at Kennedy Space Center in Florida early Saturday afternoon.

Shuttle return delayed
(AP) -- Space shuttle Discovery will have to wait a day to complete the last leg of its trip home.
Discovery
had been expected to arrive at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on
Saturday after riding piggyback atop a jumbo jet across the country,
but NASA delayed the trip for a day because of weather concerns, said
Bruce Buckingham, a spokesman with the space agency.
