Shuttle Endeavour Launch: STS-118
UPDATE: Endeavour has just launched. Three minutes into the flight, and the launch has been a great success thus far. Currently the shuttle is traveling 4200 mph and has reached an altitude of 57 miles.
The shuttle Endeavour is scheduled to launch today at 6:36 p.m. EDT. There is only a 20% chance that weather will prevent the launch from taking place. This will be the first flight for Endeavour since 2002.
STS-118's mission is to resupply the International Space Station, do some repairs, and delivering and assembling a new segment of the station.
The crew is now in White Room, where they prepare to board the shuttle.

ianivs, thanks for getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for four hours. If new developments justify it, I'll renew this flag for another cycle.

I'm curious why this is news at all, we dont report planes taking off. And honestly doesn't this happen often enough that its not really all that unique or significant?

It doesn't happen that often and the shuttle program has had a few problems recently so it is nice to see a successful launch.
In my opinion, launching humans into space is a special event, no matter how many times it has happened before.

I was just invited to add a few launch pictures to this story. I was invited to a NASA Educational Conference in Orlando including a chance to view the launch from the VIP Launch Viewing area. It was my first live launch after 40 years of being a space enthusiast, so it was especially exciting.
