Voice Report from an un-verified source.

July 17, 2007 UPDATE:  The name of the passenger who was killed in the fatal accident was Jimmy Mok according to the cards and messages adorning the light post which the car struck Thursday July 12th. The status of the driver is not known.

This is an automatic transcription of the voice report: This is Ryan Nadel reporting from Vancouver. As I was leaving my house this morning in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, I noticed there was no traffic running North and South on Granville. As I reached Granville Street from Balfour Avenue, I saw a white Nissan Sports Car Coup wrap around a lamp post. I never seen a car look like this, it's totally destroyed and the entire street between (King Edward?) and 16th is closed. So, Granville Street between (Kind Edward?) and 16th is closed due to a major car accident. Buses are running normally down the street however they are moving very slowly as they go by this disaster and I'll be filing fixtures probably within half an hour when I get to NowPublic head office. Thank you very much. This is Ryan Nadel reporting from Vancouver.

UPDATE:

13:01 | July 12th, 2007

At 9:00am this morning a CTV camera man was filming the wreckage on the West corner of Balfour and Granville and informed me that the accident happened at 1:45am. Neighbors confirmed that they heard brakes screeching and a loud crash around 1:30am. The passenger is dead and the driver survived and is in the hospital. It is believed that the reason for such extreme speed was street racing and that no drinking or drugs were involved. CTV camera man said that there was another car involved, apparently a Porsche Boxster, which fled the scene. Police still have the crime scene from King Edward to 16th blocked off because they believe that the Nissan hit the curb around Matthews street and lost control. There are fresh white Nike shock runners lying beside the passenger door.

The shocking pictures have been uploaded. The exact details are still unclear, "I think it happened in the middle of the night or early morning, I got
into the station at 5:00 am and there was already a notice up," said the bus driver.

Police were keeping pedestrians and media at least two blocks from the wreck, but when the bus drove by  I was able to see shows and other articles of clothing lying on the pavement in addition to shattered.

The car appeared to have been traveling south on Granville street when it went out of control. The car was wrapped around the sidewalk side of the pole. It appears that the car hit a wall and then wrapped itself around the pole or perhaps it hit the pole directly and spun around the pole. There were no visible skid marks on the road.

This story marks an important milestone for NowPublic and it deserves a bit of explanation.

Ryan Nadel is our newest addition to our editorial team and was the first to use our new voice-reporting technology.

Although all NP members have been able to dial 1-866-225-9530 to post stories directly to NowPublic.com (as an audio report), our brilliant team has now implemented new technology that actually transcribes the content of the audio report into text.

My bro says that car wrecks defy physics, and your photos seem to back that theory up. Thanks, Ryan, for getting this story in so fast, and for updating it with these photos.

Glad you were there Ryan to witness this..not so sure the person in the accident can say the same.

This story has been very well put together and the photo`s capture the true awesome force with which this car crashed, I am truly amazed that both people in the car did not die ! .. I guess this just shows us all how high the safety standards are in such a powerful production car and how stupid some people can be ... it would appear that these people had put little or no value on their own lives or that of others in the area.

Great Story and First Class Reporting too.

its a true tragedy, a waste of human life, and a horrible way to
lose it. I hope it serves as a lesson to those who indulge in rash
driving, and as a warning to them, that not only do they endager their
own lives, but also innocent bystanders, drivers and passengers. I hope
that such incidents dont happen in the future, and thought that might
be a futile wish, I just hope atleast some people read this, and it
affects them positively.

Once again, lets pray for the injured driver to recover soon, and may the departed passenger rest in peace

Ryan Nadel, you've convinced me you've done the work - it's authentic. I also think that you've been fair and thorough. I didn't get the sense that you were hiding your biases, or passing off other's work as your own. Or worse -- getting paid by those you cover -- so it's transparent and independent. I also think you deserve praise for being an eyewitness, and for your investigative efforts. Good stuff.
