There are two trains of thought moving things forward quickly right now. CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) has become so inexpenive to produce that now start ups are being funded to the tune of 100 million to really get the ball rolling. CIGS is not efficent, but it can be manufactured at a fraction of the cost of other technologies.
You will see buildings right over Silicon Valley get covered in this stuff first off. Sun, Google, Microsoft and others are currently in the process of covering their roofs. Once the "were cool because were solar" kicks in, companies like Maisole, DayStar and Nanosolar will probably do rather well.
Lets face it, there is a lot of desert out there that could probably benefit from a little shade. If and when the hydrogen economy kicks in, there are going to have to be hundreds and hundreds of square kilometres covered with this stuff to keep up. I recon that is the real reason for the investment.

I am living in France since 25 year. I can see clearly that the europe is a market in solar power that has not even started to get off its feet... Panneaux solaire Here comme from Germany or Italy... Frances own resorses are 9 years behind the U.S.A. and certain other countries...
I have a piece of land that is about 2kms square and exposed full south. Can anyone give me contacts with eventual solar panel companies to help in lancing a very big Mega watt installation... would concider a laon basis... where the surplus energy made, pays the original loan... possiblities of finding here in France enormous placements...
Anyone surpplies interested contact me on : +33 05-65-62-31-69
