2008: Yep, We Need a College Football Playoff System

This year is the best example for the need of an 8 or more team college football playoff system. With 7 teams in major conferences that each have 1 loss and two teams in minor conferences that went undefeated, it just makes sense that they should all get a chance at a national championship instead of just two teams.
The arguments for who should be going to the championship are endless. There’s the OU lost to Texas who lost to Texas Tech who lost to OU triangle. There’s Alabama’s argument that had they lost earlier in the season instead of now, they would still be a contender. Utah - no losses. USC - “we’re the best and we can’t help that our conference was bad this year.” Penn State has an argument in there somewhere. Florida’s loss was a fluke.
This bracket and analysis at Media Caffeine clearly depicts a situation where, if we had it in place for this year, a ton of upside potential is available. The excitement, the fairness, the chances for something amazing -- all present in this scenario.
Even Barack Obama says we need one:
"If you've got a bunch of teams who play throughout the season, and many of them have one loss or two losses, there's no clear decisive winner. We should be creating a playoff system," he tells CBS' Steve Kroft in an interview to be broadcast Sunday.
With so much support for a new system, what's the holdup?
After all is said and done, the primary opponents to a playoff system are the big bowl’s and the money that supports them. They happen on or after New Year’s day. Always have. In a playoff system, their long standing tradition of helping to determine national champioships is diminished. They would be relegated, in this system, to happening around Christmas instead of New Year’s day, thus reducing their importance. They just don’t want that to happen.
I am confident that we will have one sooner or later. Hopefully sooner.

Great analysis. I've always though that a playoff format would be a cash bonanza for the NCAA, but I guess the power and money wrapped up in the Bowl system is just too strong.
