With the 2009 NCAA March Madness underway, the 2009 tournament provided us with blowouts, upsets, and nail-biters in an interesting first day of results that has rattled the NCAA brackets. Scroll to the bottom for the latest results.

South Region:

Western Kentucky provided the first big upset knocking off the fifth seeded Illinois in a 76-72 thrilling victory. The Hilltoppers now face another tough task in Gonzaga who took down Akron 77-64. Akron was poised to provide the NCAA with the tournament's first upset leading 49-43, but Gonzaga found a way to come back and rally past the Zips.

Other NCAA scores saw Michigan beating Clemson 62-59, Oklahoma breezing by Morgan State 82-54, LSU over Butler, and North Carolina blowing out the Radford Highlanders 101-58 wrapping up first day of competition in the South.

An ugly incident occurred in the Oklahoma and Morgan State game when Blake Griffin of the Oklahoma Sooners was flipped by Ameer Ali who was ejected for his efforts. Blake Griffin was not badly hurt but says he felt some pain in his tailbone and should be ready for the next game. The latest Blake Griffin flip is part of a regular occurence of players playing hard against him with Southern California's Leonard Washington hitting him below the belt back in December.

East Region:

The other NCAA standing in the East have the UCLA Bruins beat VCU in a nail-biter 65-64 with VCU failing to convert with 11.6 seconds left. The sixth seed UCLA now faces the third seed Villanova. Not surprisingly, Minnesota and Binghamton both lost their respective games against Duke and Texas who will face each other in the second round on March 21.

West Region:

No major upsets in the West with Purdue over Northern Iowa, Washington downing Mississippi State, and Memphis beating CSU Northridge. Upsets concerning the standings have the tenth seed Maryland overtaking California and the nineth seed Texas A&M over BYU. Another blowout in the first day of the NCAA tournament have Connecticut trouncing over Chattanooga.

The first day of the 2009 NCAA tournament did not disappoint March Madness fans. The Midwest Region was idle on the first day of play with the thrilling actions continuing on March 20.
