The 2009 NFL Supplemental Draft took place July 16. The draft allows NFL teams to select players who are ineligible to play college football next year but did not petition the league for early entry before the NFL Draft deadline.

Thus far, only one team has selected a player in the 2009 NFL Supplemental Draft. The Washington Redskins selected Jeremy Jarmon, a defensive end out of Kentucky.

Eight prospects were available in the 2009 NFL Supplement Draft, including Jarmon, McKinner Dixon of Texas Tech, Deon Murphy of Kansas St., Joe McMahon of Central Michigan, Corey Surrency of Florida State, Demetrice Morley of Tennessee, Blake Boyd of Western Kentucky, and Torris Magee of Southern Miss.

The NFL Supplemental Draft rules can be a bit complicated. The NFL uses a partially weighted lottery system to determine the order of the supplemental draft. Teams are put into three categories: 1) teams with six wins or less 2) non-playoff teams 3) playoff teams.

After the order is determined, each team tells the league which players they would like to draft, if any, and in what round. The team that submits the highest bid is awarded rights to the player. If more than one team bids a pick from the same round, the team with the highest pick in the round gets to have the player.

In the case of Jeremy Jarmon, the Washington Redskins selected him with a third round pick while five other teams reportedly offered to use a fourth round pick.

If a team uses a pick in the Supplemental Draft, they must forfeit a draft pick in the corresponding round of the next year's NFL Draft.
