50-Years of Women's Hoops Honored, Team USA at 35 & WNBA at 15
July 11, 2011- The NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month) Foundation will be honoring a very historical milestone achievement in women's hoops during the month of July.
Last month during NBHHCM 2K11 the NBA celebrated its 65th Anniversary (6/6/46 to 6/6/11) of being founded and the 35th Anniversary (6/17/76 to 6/17/11) of the NBA/ABA Merger that was announced to the public.
The 100-year milestone combined Anniversary celebrations for the men's game makes these past June event milestones the most historical year for U.S. basketball.
The women's game of basketball has its own historical 50-year combined Anniversary milestone celebration during the month of July. The first-ever women's USA Basketball Team played at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada.
The pioneering team led by Hall-of-Famer's Nancy Lieberman, Anne Myers, and Pat Summitt won the silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games with a 3-2 record. The Soviet Union won the first-ever gold for women with a 5-0 record. July 19, 2011 will mark the 35th Anniversary of women's basketball being played for the first time at the 1976 Summer Games.
The Soviet Union defeated Team USA 112-77 on July 23, 1976. July 23, 2011 will be the 35th Anniversary of that defeat. The Soviet's won all 5-games by an average margin of 31.6 points.
July 23rd will also be the day of the Annual WNBA All-star Game played in San Antonio. The WNBA is celebrating its 15th Anniversary season the league began play in 1997.
July 19-26 will be the most historical week milestone run for women's hoops in U.S. history.
July 19, 1976- Team USA played it's first Olympic basketball game vs. Japan losing 84-71.
July 20, 1976-Team USA defeated Bulgaria 95-79 to win its first Olympic basketball game. The win over Bulgaria would later break the tie between Team USA and Bulgaria and give Team USA the silver medal.
July 22, 1976- Team USA defeated Canada 89-75 to win its second Olympic basketball game.
July 23, 1976- Team USA was defeated by the Soviet Union 112-77. The 35-point victory showed how dominant the Soviet team was at the time. Team USA won the gold medal in 1984. The team was coached by Pat Summitt.
July 23, 2011- The WNBA will play it's Annual All-Star Game in San Antonio.
July 26, 1976- Team USA defeated Czechoslovakia 83-67 to cement the silver medal. The 1976 Summer Olympics closing ceremony were on August 1st.
