6th Anniversary of Jordan's Last NBA Game is Dunkadelic-History
It was 6-years ago today April 16, 2003 that Michael Jordan played his last NBA game. The greatest player ever to play the game of basketball would never sport his signature "Air Jordan" sneakers again in a regulation contest. Jordan the 5-time NBA MVP, 6-time NBA Champion, 6-time Finals MVP, and 10-time scoring champ would retire for the 3rd and last time.
Michael Jordan played that last game as member of the Washington Wizards. He and his mates faced off against Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers. The 21,000 fans at the Wachiovia Center in Philadelphia would be the last see the great MJ in an NBA uniform. The pre-game ceremony with Dr. J, Moses Malone, and World B. Free was a sign of class by the Sixers organization. The Bulls home announcer would introduce Jordan for the last time, "from North Carolina, at guard, 6'6 Michael Jooorr-dan".
Jordan wore his signature Air Jordan 18 sneakers. Allen Iverson decided not to wear his signature Answer 6 sneakers. Iverson instead wore a shoe named the ATR Dunkadelic (Above the Rim). The term dunkadelic created in 1997 as the one-word term to define the culture fusion of basketball & hip-hop. Now 6-years later its the name of the sneaker worn by the home-team star player in the last game of Michael Jordan's career (Wow).
The Answer 6 were popular due to the commercial of the shoe featuring rap-star Jadakiss. Iverson and Jadakiss showed in the commercial how powerful the bond was and still is between hoops and hip-hop. Wearing the ATR Dunkadelic shoe Iverson was making history for the term that would define the culture fusion of hoops and hip-hop. Iverson has been deemed as the #1 Most Influential person to time period that is known now as The "Dunkadelic-Era" In America.
Iverson scored 35 points for the victorious Sixers, and Jordan poured in 15 to end one of the most remarkable sports careers in history. The combined 50 points by Iverson and Jordan happened to be the name/moniker of the most popular rapper that year Curtis "50-Cent" Jackson who had recently released his soon-to-be 10-time platinum album 'Get Rich or Die Trying'. It would be one of the most successful rap albums of all-time. Iverson and 50 Cent (G-Unit Sneaker) would later share the same sneaker company Reebok. Reebok also designed a shoe-line for rap mogul Jay-Z (S.Carter).
To honor the 25th Anniversary of the hoops and hip-hop culture fusion born in 1984 (1984-2009) June 2009 will be the 1st National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month. The Iverson dunkadelic shoe is now and forever part of hoops and hip-hop history as the era turns 25.
April 16, is also the birthday of Kareem Abdul Jabaar the NBA's all-time leading scorer (38,387). Jordan is 3rd on the all-time list (32,292).
