8th Regional Athletics Meet begins in Mussoorie

MUSSOORIE, 3 Nov: The first day of the 8th Regional Athletics Meet began today with much fanfare as the regional Government School students and teachers alike converged at the Survey Ground in Mussoorie.
Event Coordinator Sunder Lal Nautiyal welcomed Chief Guest Jot Singh Gunsola, MLA.
The welcome song was sung by GGIC students and this was followed by the hoisting of the Athletics Flag. The games were then formally declared open by the Chief Guest.
A march past by all the regional schools was held which was reviewed by the Chief Guest. The athletics oath was taken by all the athletes.
The cultural programme was presented by Government Junior High School, Kulri, and Government School, Primary, Kitabh Ghar, was also appreciated by the gathered audience.
In his address, OP Uniyal said that sports played an integral part in a child’s development and this was a commendable effort on the part of teachers and organizers, alike.
The Chief Guest, Gunsola, appreciated the effort of the organisers and wished the participants the very best for the competition. He emphasised on the sportsman’s spirit to be shown by all participants. He had, inspite of being unwell, made it to the grounds.
The first event was the 800 metres race in all divisions (girls and boys), discus throw, javelin, 50 metres, 100 metres, 400 metres in the primary division.
The winner of the senior 800 metres race was Praveen Ramola, who stood first after a keen contest.
In the junior boys discus, the 1st place went to Arjun Singh (Nirmala High School), 2nd place went to Sachin Thapli (Nirmala High School) and 3rd place went to Narendar. In shot put, boys, Sachin Thapli, (NHS) was declared the winner, Sarvan Singh of GGIC came 2nd and Arjun Singh (NHS) came 3rd. The winners were presented medals by the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Yogeshwar Vashisht, Sunder Lal Nautiyal, Satish Sharma, Rajesh Saxena, Anuj Tayal, Rafiq Ahmed, Kavita Negi, Anita Rawat, Indu Uniyal, Manju Thapa, Madhusudan Dutta and others were present on the occasion.
