The city of Montreal is buzzing as the hometown Alouettes host the Calgary Stampeders in the 96th Grey Cup.

The game will feature teams that both won their divisions and have the top ranked offenses in the league. Both starting quarterbacks--Calgary's Henry Burris and Montreal's Anthony Calvillo--have been nominated as the CFL's outstanding player.

The two teams did take different routes to the Grey Cup. The Alouettes have been perennial Grey Cup contenders while the Stampeders ended up on top this year after finishing in last place the previous year.

The Stamps owe much of their improved record to a revamped defense. After allowing the most points in the league last season, the Stamps brought in a new defensive co-ordinator and 10 new starters and finished with the CFL's best defense.

Their solid defendin will be put to the test against the Alouettes smooth offensive machine led by veteran quarterback Anthony Calvillo. New head coach Marc Trestman has worked with Calvillo to help fine tune the team's offensive scheme and Als players responded by dominating the Eastern division.

While the oddsmakers give Calgary a slight edge, many analysts see Sunday's game as too close to call.

One thing you can bet on: there will be a hell of a party on St. Catharine Street this weekend.

This, friends, is as good as it gets. Sean Fitz-Gerald, who writes for the National Post newspaper, put the perfect spin on it yesterday when he suggested that having Montreal host a Grey Cup is akin to having Las Vegas and Times Square hook up to create a baby -- and then having New Orleans raise the kid during Mardi Gras.

So, yes, St. Catherine Street and environs will be hopping. If your buddies have tickets for the game -- leaving you both friendless and funless -- you are green with envy. Of course, their ride home on the hangover train will be a killer, but that's a concern for another day. In the meantime, party on.
