In 2009, Edmonton was the site of the Junior Nationals Boxing Championships.

This is but one of numerous tournaments hosted by an Alberta city over the many years of boxing.

The next important event for BOXING ALBERTA should be the Annual General meeting

to be held in Edmonton in May.

Of interest some of the special annual awards include the names of some folks that have been

well connected to Amateur Boxing.  Examples include the Paul Hortie award,  the

Denis Belair Memorial and the Joe McGowan memorial.

May 2009 also marks the 25 anniversary of Team Alberta's participation in the

1984 Junior Nationals and Senior Box Off in Burnaby, BC.  Looking back

members of the Junior Team included:

Edgar Davis, Cory Burton, K. Moore, Leonard Petrie,  Scotty Olson,

Peter Oxtoby, Eric Henson, George Davis, Richard Olson, R. Kovacs,

and R. Stowell.

In Seniors competition, Alberta's Rick DUFF would defear Darrell FLINT of Nova Scotia to

earn a berth  on Canada's 1984 Olympic Boxing team.

In July of  '84, DUFF would return to B C to attend the training centre in Burnaby

before travelling with the team to Los Angeles.

National Boxing Tournaments like the 2009 tournament was not the first and it won't be the last.    Looking back to 1985 the Seniors National Tournament was held March 29 - 31 in Medicine Hat.

The tournament comprised of the National A and B teams and Provincial teams and one boxer George Mason  representing the Yukon Territory.

Some names to remember from Team Alberta are:

Scotty OLSON, Mike SPIRY, Rod SIMONDS, Kelly PERLETTE, Bailey HEUMER,
