New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez may not be able to play the 2009 season with a torn labrum in his right hip after all, and he may have to have surgery sooner than first thought.

GM Brian Cashman said last night that surgery will have to happen, but when it will is still unclear.

Cashman said more than once that “there are no surgeries scheduled” and “there is no surgery scheduled for tomorrow.” But he also said Rodriguez would remain in Vail, Colo., for the indefinite future to consult with a hip specialist and to have tests.

Manager Joe Girardi however has said that surgery will be really soon, rather than later.
Rodriguez has nine seasons remaining on his contract with the Yankees, worth $275 million. He was in practice yesterday and he has talked to other athletes with similar conditions to help him make a decision.
Earlier, Girardi said of surgery: “There’s a big decision to be made. That’s the determination Alex and the doctors have to make. If you play, what are the consequences and how much more damage can I do? I guess every day you check and you kind of hold your breath.”

If he chooses to play without the surgery, he will have to be monitored really closely to see if it gets worse.
