A 17-year-old Pennsylvania resident was questioned by police after posting a death threat towards Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin on a hockey web site.

Police tracked down the teenager, who posted the following message:

"Im killing Ovechkin i'll go to jail i dont care anymore."

Police did not to press charges against the teenager, choosing instead to just speak with him about the matter. The 17-year-old posted the message under the username pensforlife87 in a forum on the Pittsburgh Penguins official site. The message was removed as was a thread about the death threat on the Washington Capitals website.

Many are surprised that the police chose to get involved in what was essentially a flame war. Most internet message boards are filled with invective like the one featured on the Penguins site. Still, authorities felt the threat crossed a line.

A similar incident occurred in March when a Calgary Flames fan made threatening phone calls to the head office of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Peter Stenzel, 52, made threats towards Blue Jackets rookie goaltender Steve Mason.

I find it interesting that the police got involved. I think such abusive rhetoric is so common on sport fan websites though that would make it incredibly difficult for police to investigate every single death threat expressed online.
