The Algeria-Malawi game ended with a stunning victory for the Malawian side, as Malawi defeated Algeria 3-0. This is Malawi's first win at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.  Last time Malawi faced Algeria, the score was 3-0, but with Algeria as the victors back in 1984.

But with nine European-based players in their starting line-up and the game kicking off in mid-afternoon, Algeria struggled in the stifling tropical heat and made life even more difficult of themselves by gifting Malawi the opener.

Meanwhile, Togo's team will not return to the tournament after a day of will-they-or-won't-they, which ended in Togo returning home after an attack on their team bus. According to Togolese Prime Minister Gilbert Huongbo, Togo was not given enough assurance that its team would be safe:

"Our analysis is that they want [the shooting] to be seen as a non-event and the show must go on as planned; there mustn't be an official change [saying] Togo is causing problems to the festival,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.
