Brazilian police have concluded that boxer Arturo Gatti committed suicide, and ordered that his wife, Amanda Rodrigues, be released. The police took Rodrigues into custody believing that she may have played a role in Gatti's death.
Police investigator Paulo Alberes told The Associated Press that Gatti killed himself on July 11 while vacationing in nothern Brazil. It is believed that he killed himself by hanging. Few other details were released. A press conference is scheduled for later in the day.
Police initially believed that Amanda Rodrigues may have strangled Gatti with her purse strap in his sleep.
Rumors had circulated in Brazilian media that Gatti may have committed suicide. Gatti's family firmly rejected the Gatti suicide rumors.
"To think that [Gatti would] commit suicide, when he's on top of the world, it's unbelievable. I don't believe that at all," friend Herby Whyne said during Gatti's funeral.

It has just been a bad few months to be famous. Think of how many people have run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible - You have Ed MacMahon, Farrah Fawcett, David Carradine, Bernie Mac, Alexis Arguello, and Michael Jackson. (Steven Tyler also just got hurt - but otherwise he's fine.) It would seem difficult to believe someone would not wake up if they were being strangled with a purse strap. Still, this kind of situation is very difficult for a family to deal with, and I'm sure they would probably want the media to keep their distance - such a pity that won't stay away from Michael Jackson's bereaved...it's sick, but I suppose it's making somebody mony, not that it's excusable in any way.
