Australian Open 2010 Results: Djokovic Out, Na Li Beats Williams
There are four days to go in the Australian Open 2010. Day 11 brought a couple of big upsets, including the elimination of No.3 seeded Novak Djokovic and No.6 seeded Venus Williams.
The biggest upset to date is the elimination of Novak Djokovic, the 2008 Australian Open champion from Serbia. Djokovic was eliminated by the very person who was the runner-up to him in 2008 -- 24-year-old Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France. Djokovic complained of stomach pains during the match, but finished the game anyway. With the reigning Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal out with an injury, none of the four remaining men, with the exception of Roger Federer, have ever won the Australian Open before. Marin Cilic will face Andy Murray on Thursday. The winner will go on to face either Roger Federer or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the finals.
Serena Williams beat Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in just three sets, getting one step closer to winning her fifth Australian Open title. In another surprise upset, Venus Williams was defeated by No. 16 seeded Na Li of China. Venus Williams has not made it into the finals stage of the Australian Open since 2003. Na Li has joined her compatriot Jie Zhang of China who advanced into the semi-finals on Tuesday and will play Justine Henin on Thursday. Many fans are anticipating an all-Chinese final, which would set precedent at the Australian Open. The tournament has never been won by a woman from China.
