I boxed for Bob Decker in 1968, winning the Tacoma Jr GG at 139 lbs.  I am now 60 years old and would like to know if Mr. Decker is still active in boxing or otherwise.  If anyone could help me, I would appreciate it. Boy, I look back on those days.  A green kid from Eastern Oregon, where we still rode horses into town, and then all of a sudden here I was in a city where I had a 24 hour movie right across the street from the gym for the price of one dollar.  The kids back home would never believe me--neither would I after entering  the place. What a way to learn about the world.  Not only did I need boxing lessons, I needed life skills lessons too.  Still, a great experience.

In 1968, I was fighting out of the Firefighters in Vancouver, we would come to

Seattle for club shows.  In one bout I faced Neil Knight and won the decision,

In the 1980  Bob Decker was in Vancouver and running the Shamrock boxing club.

One of his boxers was Manny Sobral.  Sobral is now promoting professional boxing

and can be contacted.  He may now where Decker is now.

Bob also served with me as directors of the B C Amateur Boxxing Association.

Mr. Zelley

Thank's for the reply.  I do remember Gary Farraro, a great little boxer.  We sparred together a lot during the 68 season.  Whatever happened to Frazier Scott, who fought Nino Benvenutti for the world middleweight championship? Also, how does one abtain records from the Tacoma Jr GG tournament in 1968, or is it even possible? Again, thank you for the reply and if you ever see Mr. Decker, tell him hi for me.

I remember Gary, he trained with Neil Knight.

Also, I was in the Tacoma Golden Gloves and faced Ray Lampkin of

Portland Knott Street Boxing Club under the capable hands of Chuck Lincoln.

Lampkin would turn pro and fight Roberto Duran in a title shot in the Seventies.

I understand that George Armson of the BCABA has passed away during 2008.  I have been unable to locate an obituary to get the names of any family members to contact.  Do you have any information?  George and I worked at the City of Burnaby together many years ago, prior to his retirement and I kept in contact with him over the years.

In recent days the likes of TSN's Russ ANBER remembers those of 1988 with references to Manny Sobral, Asif Dar,

Scotty Olson, Lennox Lewis and others, but Canada's amateur boxing story doesn't begin in 1988, and it doesn't begin in 1984 with the likes of BC's Dale Walters and the Olympic team including DeWit, Lewis, etc. for real

beginnings it is important to step back to the 1940's

and 1950's with many outstanding ring warriors

such as Vic MURDOCH, Norm DELAIRE,

Stan ALMOND, Earl COOK, Terry DOYLE,

Bus LINDSAY. Jimmy CROOK, Jerris JAMEL,

and many more.

In an earlier post reference to BCABA life members with a few of the names.

Some of the others Joe Magri, Al Decaire, Don Cowan,  Bill Brenner, Harry Twist and Walter Austin.

The majority of names relate to Greater Vancouver folks, thus does not represent

a fair recognition of many folks involved in the past!

The Galloway name in boxing takes us back to the Seventies along with other names and clubs.  You may remember the likes of Kerry Gallagher,  Les Hamilton, Gary Ivers, Eddie McCaffrey,  Jaime Ollenberger,  Gordie Lawson and Billy Watson.

Then there were those coaches and officials such as Earl Elgie, Jim GallagherWalter Boyce,  Ralph Robson, Joe Swift and Jeff Yule.
