B of A Chicago Marathon 2009: Race Results, Photos & Video
The 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon took place Oct. 11. Kenyan runner Sammy Wanjiru won the Chicago Marathon 2009 in a record time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 41 seconds. Wanjiru's Chicago Marathon finishing time was both a course record and an American record. Wanjiru, who won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, earned a $100,000 bonus for beating the course and American records. Wanjiru missed the world record of 2:03:59 set last year by Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie.
Wanjiru beat out fellow countrymen Vincent Kipruto and Charles Munyeki, who finished second and third.
As for the women, Liliya Shobukhova of Russia won the 2009 Chicago marathon, taking 2 hours 25 minutes and 55 seconds to finish the 26.2-mile Chicago Marathon route. Irina Mikitenko took second while 2008 champ Lidiya Grigoreyva took third place.
