Watson: It is one of those days when everything works out and luck played a part too. I was not aware of the world record. I just did not want to run too much. After getting to a hundred we just thought of limiting the running and hit a few boundaries. When there is not too much bounce or turn, it is easier to execute the big shots. Opening has been the best thing to happen to me, in Test cricket too. You get to face the best bowlers.
Clarke: That is probably the best innings I've ever seen. Bangladesh finished very well. They got quite a few in the PP. The spinners bowled well and so I don't see the need for me bowling
Shakib al Hasan: Watto batted really well. He stole the game from us. 229 was good but he played an outstanding innings. We had a reasonable total. We thought we could fight it out. The older ball was not coming on to the bat but he was well set by then. The way he batted was just magnificent despite the dropped catches.
Bangladesh would have entertained hopes of choking Australia after they got to 229 but it was not to be. Watson was in a murderous mood from the first over. Some incredible hitting saw him hit 15 sixes and break the world record for maximum sixes in an innings. He also went past Hayden to record the highest individual score by an Aussie. He ended on a mind-boggling 185 of just 96 balls. No bowler was shown any mercy and were taken to the cleaners. Ponting gave him good company but managed to score just 37 in a partnership of 170. An incredible batting display from Watson and Ponting just admired it from the other end. Tendulkar's 200 could have been broken if Bangladesh had scored 20 or 30 more. Bangladesh will be devastated even as
Australia rejoice.
They win the three match series 2-0.
"The reason I kept going after [reaching] 100 is because I was tired, and I didn't really want to run too much; I was either going to try to hit as many sixes as I could or get out because I was pretty tired, that was as simple as it was. It was hot and humid out there, so it was nice to be able to get a few out of the middle to save my running."
As an allrounder and now the team's vice-captain, fatigue is an ever-present issue for Watson, and he revealed his preference for batting second in limited-overs contests.
"It's always actually easier batting second; although you do get pretty hot from bowling first, it means I can actually get through my batting innings knowing I don't have to bowl next and don't have to use my energy," Watson said.
"So my preferred way of playing one-day cricket personally, is actually batting second because you don't need the energy. If it comes off like it did today, I don't have to run too much. So it was definitely nice today."
