Bay To Breakers 2009 Photos & Results-Records Set During Heatwave
The 2009 ING Bay to Breakers took place in San Francisco. The offbeat race was won by Sammy Kitwara, who racked up the fastest 12K race time ever recorded. Kitwara needed just 33 minutes and 31 seconds to complete the 12K course.
Nineteen-year-old Tilahun Regassa of Ethiopia came in second place with a time of 34 minutes and 15 seconds. Third place went to John Yuda of Tanzania, who finished the race in 34 minutes and 23 seconds. Ethiopian Teyba Erkesso won the women's competition.
In addition to being a competitive race, the Bay to Breakers is also a party. As many as 65,000 runners ran the Bay to Breakers route, many of them in costumes, something that was more difficult than usual due to a recent heatwave in the Bay Area.
