BC Boxing News - A new journey begins - THE ROAD TO EXCELLENCE
As a follow-up to "B C BOXING NEWS - Flashbacks & Memories, a new story is to begin which blends some of the issue raised in the past story with expanded information, and fresh new bits and pieces of information and new developments.
The beginning of this story is like the beginning of the new season in amateur boxing in British Columbia to cover 1909/1910 and "Boxing B C" (BCABA) has a fresh new Board of Directors with the new president being Chris Jones of Victoria and a membet of the Capital City Boxing organization.
The month of October 2009 will see a number of club cards in various regions of the Province with the first expected in the Mission area in early October.
Looking back to the previous story, there were such stories of the brief history of the Langley Boxing Club and past coaches such as coach Elmore or Austin over the decades.
There was a previous story that briefly mentioned The 1976 B C Select Junior Boxers vs the English schooboy team in competition. This story will expand the details to give some specifics, but the three Victoria locals to receive special awards for service to the sport of amateur boxing in British Columbia were MIKE CAIRD, HOWARD CURLING and BRIAN ZELLEY. The two tournaments took place in the Exhibition Gardens in Vancouver and a site hosted by the London Boxing Club in Victoria.

LONDON BOXING CLUB - The Last Bell - Fade To Black
Nothing lasts but the memories, and so it is with the last boxing event for the London Boxing Club of Victoria, BC, Canada. When the last bell rang, it wasn't the end but a new beginning with the Victoria Athletic Association (VAA) aka - Victoria Athletics.
But the final show was an International Tournament that took place on June 6, 1976
(6/6/76) - It was the
NORTHWEST COUNTIES S.A.B.A. TEAM OF ENGLAND
VS
THE BRITISH COLUMBIA TEAM
The Souvenir Program cost 75 cents and had a
Canadian Maple Leaf and the British Union Jack
Of the various boxer from British Columbia, young DALE WALTERS would advance to become a member of the Canadian Olympic Boxing Team in 1984 along with others such as LENNOX LEWIS. Dale would earn a bronze medal and would one day become a member of a couple. of.....Sports Halls of Fame. Lewis would also be a member of the 1988 Canadian Olympic Boxing Team and earn a gold medal for Canada.

I am looking for old pictures or articles on my uncle, Darrel Elmore, his dad Fred ran the Langley Boxing Club for years. Uncle Darrel had quite a few BC Golden Gloves under his belt, I know that he had the 1955, 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960 for his weight. He trained under Harold Mann in 1967 when Harold moved to Smithers, BC. If anyone out there happens to know any contacts etc it would be greatly appreciated.

1960 B. C. GOLDEN GLOVES - DARREL ELMORE
Stepping back in time to 1960 is quite the journey, but along the way the name of
Darrel Elmore is one of many that boxers under the bright lights in what was billed as the "1960 Vancouver Optimists Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament and BC Olympic Trials"
When the dust had settled, Elmore was one of twenty boxers that would blast their way into the finals. the last twenty standing were:
Tommy Black, Dick Huber, Tont Lalitch, Merritt Bisson, Mickey Mazur,
Ernie Falconer, Winnie Schelt, Adrien Charron, Bill Tsuchiya, Bill Caulson,
Bill Adams, Skimp Williams, Bob Ginetti, Norman LaRue, Al Curtiz
Haarry Hinz, Lindy Lindmoser, Darrel Elmore, Paddy Clark, Vic Vieberg
Like most tournaments from 1960 to 1968, there could be no predictions of which boxers would be left standing to see action in the finals of a Golden Gloves or a DiamonBelt tournament in British Columbia or regional areas like Vancouver Island.
In 1960, some outstanding warriors didn't make it into the finals such as:
Mike Caird, Mickey MacMillan,Gordie McGaw, Bruce Baillie, and Gordon Rabey.
In the finals of the light-heavyweight division Lindy Lindmoser of Vancouver won a decision over Darrell Elmore of Smithers.
The one selected as the 1960 Golden Boy would be Al Curtis of the Esquimalt Boxing Club. The best bout was Skimp Williams of Chemainus & Frank Jordison of Vancouver

BOXING BC has posted it's preliminary schedule for 2009/2010 and it look like the Mission City boxing club will be one of thr front runners in staging amateur boxing club card.
Nothing showing, yet, for Vancouver Island boxing clubs in Victoria, Nanaimo, and Campbell River. Time will tell if the clubs can match the glory days of the Sixties, Seventies, and Eighties.
With two clubs in Prince George, things should happen. Also hope to hear about action in Kelowna & Peachland.

The Road to Excellence begins with the club shows, the real classroom for boxing.
So, hats off to the Mission City Boxing Club in being one of the first in BC to open the door so other may start their own journey along "the road of excellence in 2009/2010.

Word is one of the key tournaments in British Columbia , the Provincial Championships will be held in two locations - Peachland & Kelowna.
Good idea, spreading the benefits and sharing the time and effort for this Boxing B C annual event.
The two boxing clubs in that region include the Peachland Boxing Club and the Thistletown Boxing Club in Kelowna. The "Thistle" and the "Peach" unite to make things happen.

A reminder that the "Road To Glory" is a Boxing BC term, the "Road To Excellence" is my own term and should not be considered an idea supported by Boxing BC or any of the BC boxing clubs. However, it is a good idea in thought and deed.
Also, I have no problem with any club member or official talking about the Road to Excellence. Before there can be "Glory" there must be a few traces of excellence in training, coaching, and officiating the ring action.

From 1983: "Not only must the boxer use the left jab swiftly, accurately and powerfully
but must also learn to defend against the jab and execute effective counter punches."
- B Zelley, "Vancouver Island Amateur Boxing News", Fall 1983.
As the old quote goes, "variety is the spice of life". For the boxer, variety in skills is a one-way ticket to the "Road to Excellence". There are many paths, but only one road.

The Road To the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Championships
At the present time amateur boxers in British Columbia are training and preparing for the Boxing BC's Provincial Championships which should help to determine the teams for the Canadian National Open Boxing Championships slated for early 2010.
Aside the usual training in the various clubs throughout BC, some of the boxers have already participated in various club shows in Alberta and Washington State with more to follow. Next on the list is Prince George where the Spruce Capital Boxing Club under the direction of Wayne Sponagle will present a boxing card with very reasonable ticket prices. The event will take place on Saturday and is called "Night of the Warriors".
Expected to see action on the main event will be lightweight Marcus Hume who recently travelled to Edmonton, Alberta to win a victory over Layton King of Camrose, Alberta. The HUME vs KING bout was selected as the best fight of the night in the card billed as the "Night of Knights IV" by the West Edmonton Knights Boxing Club. One of the Knights boxers is expected to see action on the Warriors card.
Looking back through the long history of amateur boxing in British Columbia, Prince George has always been an excellent location going back to the days of Harold Mann and boxers such as Laurie Mann, Jack Meda, Harold Handlin, Laurie Rorick and many more in the Sixties & Seventies.
At the present time there is also a second amateur boxing club by the name of
Inner City Boxing Club under coach and former member of the Nanaimo Boxing Club, Bob Pegues with Canadian Boxing Champion Ken Lally.
More on the history of the Nanaimo Boxing Club and BC Amateur Boxing can be found elswhere on Now Public.
Also, in the news is former three-time BC Junior Golden Boy and the winner of the Best Junior Boxer of BC in 1981 is CIFF BALLENDINE who by special request is expected to attend the induction of Mike Caird into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame on November 21 st. Ballendine was also a Silver Boy and a Buckskin Boy and won numerous titles and awards in British Columbia. Expected to present the award to Caird will be Brian Zelley.

An important lesson for Boxing BC and all the boxing clubs in BC is to learn the lessons of activity in tournaments and a regular diet of quality club show with all=star potential.
