Friday night an enthusiastic crowd witnessed the BCHL Nanaimo Clippers lose 4/5 to the Vernon Vipers.  While the Nanaimo Clippers continued their losing streak, now 15 games long, the crowd went home somewhat mollified.

The Vernon Vipers are on a roll, last season garnering the Provincial Championship.  With 13 veterans of that campaign returning they have achieved top spot in the province again this year, with more wins, more goals and a killer power play.  They played the provincial all star team in Nanaimo on Wednesday and defeated them 5/2.  The struggling Nanaimo Clippers were expected to be drubbed soundly.

The game started as expected with a lacklustre performance by the Clippers, allowing the Vernon Vipers an early goal.  The second period, the fans saw a different team come out of the dressing room.  Nanaimo Clippers scored twice, gaining the lead.  Vernon Vipers tied it up, but toward the end of the third period the score was tied 4/4.  It looked as if the game would go into overtime.  A couple of unfortunate penalties tipped the balance and the Vernon Vipers scored the game winner in the last minute of the game.

BCHL Nanaimo Clippers next home game is January 22 at the Frank Crane Arena against the Cowichan Capitals.

Well, Nanaimo may need a pep talk.
