For those diehard hockey fans who ventured out in spite of high winds and high water Wednesday night, they were rewarded with a Nanaimo Clippers big win against the Merritt Centennials. The Centennials scored first and early in the first period only to be answered with eight goals from the Nanaimo Clippers. Final score Nanaimo Clippers eight, Merritt Centennials one.
The Merritt Centennial team is physically larger than the Nanaimo Clippers, but speed and skill won the day this time. The Nanaimo Clippers' goalie stopped 21 out of the 22 shots on goal. The Merritt Centennial Goalie was peppered with 52 shots on goal, managing to stop 44 of them. That is nearly one shot per minute that the Merritt goalie had to handle.
Merritt Centennials Team played short handed for much of the second period and a good portion of the third which also hampered their scoring chances.
The game Wednesday night saw the Nanaimo Clippers extend their undefeated streak to eight. They have an on the road game Friday night and an at home game Saturday, meeting the Westside Warriors from WestKelowna.
