The BC Hockey League season opener in this Island city saw the Nanaimo Clippers meet the Victoria Grizzlies.  Grizzlies counted first coup in the hockey season for 2009/10. The final score was Victoria Grizzlies 5, Nanaimo Clippers 4.

First period was dull.  The Victoria Grizzlies scored two unanswered goals.  The second period woke up the fans when the Nanaimo Clippers scored to even the play.  They went on to pull ahead only to be tied.  The final goal, scored by the Vicoria Grizzlies in the dying minutes of the game, gave them the victory.

The first hockey game of the BCHL season was a rough one.  It looked, from the stands, that players were settling old scores.  Many penalties were assessed with the Grizzlies serving penalties as the game ended.  One of the penalties was boarding against Bremner of the Clippers who had scored three goals in the game.  Bremner got up slowly but was able to continue the play.

Next home game for the Nanaimo Clippers is September 18 at the Frank Crane Arena against the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
