What began as an off-season extension has become a full fledged soccer love affair between soccer superstar David Beckham and AC Milan. It's sort of a pay-to-play deal, in which Beckham has contributed personally to a deal which keeps him with AC Milan until halfway through the season.  Beckham will return to the LA Galaxy in mid-July 2009.

Beckham has been on loan, as it were, to the Italian side, and has since expressed the desire to make AC Milan his new home.

Beckham, 33, is to stay on loan at Milan until the end of the season before returning to the United States.

No financial details have been released but the Galaxy said it had been funded jointly by Beckham and Milan.

I'm really grateful to the LA Galaxy and AC Milan for making this dream deal happen," added Beckham, who confirmed his family would remain in Los Angeles during his time in Italy, which is set to end on 30 June.

... And to think it all started as a chance for Beckham to remain eligible for international play.
