Football star David Beckham's transfer to AC Milan could prolong his international career. Milan director Umberto Gandini believes that Beckham's motivation for moving to Italy was to get back to form by playing against top international competition.
Becks has played 107 caps, the third-most in the England's history. If AC Milan has anything to say about it, his international will extend to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
"We think we can give him what he's looking for now, which means an environment where he can train with the top players and get back to top shape," Gandini said, adding Beckham wasn't facing good enough competition in the MLS to keep him playing at top level. "He needs a much more competitive environment."
Beckham's future Milan teammates seem excited to have him on board. Milan's Brazilian star Kaka and Ronaldinho appear ready to welcome Becks with open arms.
"I hope to learn something from his way of taking free-kicks as it is so original. It’s just the Beckham style and I sincerely wish I will further improve alongside him, during the few months he will stay at Milanello.”
