Bicycling with the D.C. MOB
A new bicycle advocacy group has emerged in the nations capitol. They call themselves the D.C. Ministry Of Bicycles or D.C. MOB for short. Despite what their abbreviated title suggests they are a peaceful grassroots group that encourages the co-existence of bicycles and motor vehicles.
D.C. MOB's main event is a monthly costume ride. Costumes and helmets are not required but strongly encouraged. Leaders of the group begin the event with general bicycle related announcements, a review of the route and a reminder to the group that all traffic laws will be obeyed. After touring the city by bicycle they stop at a local gathering such as a market and distribute double sided leaflets, on one side the flyers explain how to drive with bicycles, on the other side it gives tips on how to bicycle with automobiles.
Unlike critical mass, which in some cities has become an aggressive retaliation to auto-centric societies, D.C. MOB is a gateway event that can ease drivers onto the seat of a bicycle. Its a fun and friendly ride with a serious message to both drivers and riders; Road safety is your responsibility.
Rides occur monthly in the above freezing temperatures and all capable bodies on bicycles are invited to join. Visit the D.C MOB blog for more information; dcmob.org

Bicycles are environmentally friendly. I like that. They are also quiet, for the most part. Additionally, you rarely see a fatality in an accident involving only bicycles.
