Bill McLaren Dies at 86: Audio and Video of 'Voice of Rugby'

Bill McLaren,  the l egendary rugby union television commentator  has died at the age of 86, the BBC announced on Tuesday. During his 50-year broadcasting, McLaren became known as the "voice of rugby" to a generation of sports fans in the UK and around the world.

McLaren died peacefully in hospital in his native Hawick with his family by his side.

McLaren was born in 1923 and played for his hometown team in Hawick prior to World War II. After the war, he nearly played for Scotland's national team, but was stymied by a near-fatal bout of tuberculosis. He broadcast his first rugby match on BBC radio in 1953. He went on to a storied career that lasted until 2002.
