Samuel Gomez, a student a Blue Springs High School, is suing the school district after he suffered an injury while taking part in an MMA fight supervised by a school coach. Gomez, who used to compete on the school's wrestling team, is seeking $25,000 in damages after he suffered two broken teeth and had another tooth knocked out. Gomez claims he needed more than $7,000 in dental work to repair the damage from the MMA fight. His family says he may need more than $20,000 to fully repair his teeth.

Among the defendants is Blue Spring assistant coach James Williamson, who watched and cheered during the Samuel Gomez MMA fight. The fight took place after a wrestling practice was canceled. One wrestling team member decided to horse around and put on some sparring gloves and he and Gomez began to grapple in an MMA-style fight. Another teammate caught the whole Samuel Gomez fight on video.

The Samuel Gomez lawsuit states that Blue Springs High School promoted MMA fighting. The school even created wrestling t-shirts with a UFC emblem on them.

Gomez's attorney contends that the school was not particularly concerned with Gomez's needs.

In the aftermath of Gomez’s fight, Baylard said that the Gomez family confronted Hagerty and also exchanged e-mails regarding the matter. The family sought an incident report to be written about the brawl. Initially, according to Baylard, their demand was rebuffed. Baylard said Hagerty told the father if an incident report was written, it would be categorized as “fighting” and Gomez could be expelled from the high school.

“I think the entire family definitely viewed that as a threat,” Baylard said.
