Boat Race 2010: Cambridge beat Oxford - Light Blues Victorious
The Light Blues of Cambridge University beat the Dark Blues of Oxford University in the 156th Boat Race.
It is the first time since 2007 that Cambridge have won stopping Oxford's bid for a hat-trick of victories.
Oxford were hot favourites after Cambridge lost the toss and raced from the less favoured Middlesex station. The Light Blues kept Oxford in their sights all through the race overtaking them near the Middlesex bend and winning with clear water between the crews.
This year the crews were truly international including the American twins, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, who are famous for suing Facebook for $65 million claiming that they had partly invented the social networking site. The Winklevosses tasted defeat today as part of the losing Dark Blues crew of Oxford.
Since the race was first rowed in 1829 Cambridge have now won 80 times compared to Oxford's 75.
The Boat Race is now as much a cultural event as a sporting event and crowds throng the banks of the Thames for this annual race that in some ways marks spring along with other events such as The Grand National that will be run next Saturday April 10th at the famous Aintree race course.
The race was shown live to a world TV audience by the BBC and viewing figures were thought to be some of the highest ever partly due to the Winklevoss twins participation.
