Cruiserweight boxer Juan Carlos Robles amputated his own right pinky finger after a motorcycle accident. Robles suffered a broken kneecap, fractured forearm and a dislocated elbow. He also got a horrible road rash on his right pinky that just wouldn't go away.

Since he didn't have proper health insurance, Robles decided to take things into his own hands.

"I couldn't wait," said Robles, who works full time for an excavation company. "I was out for a while. I needed money, and I had a fight lined up."

So he went home, put towels over the kitchen table and blocked off a working area with several two-by-fours. He put gauze around the area and twisted soldering wire around his right pinkie to slow the flow of blood.

"Then I put a wood chisel on it and dropped a 15-pound weight on the chisel," Robles said. "The piece shot out about six feet like a missile."

So what happened to that severed finger? Well, he decided to make a necklace out of it and wear it around his neck.

The damaged digit hasn't hurt his boxing career. Robles has posted a respectable 10-2-0 record. Despite his success, his boxing career may not last much longer.

"I fight because I enjoy it," he said. "But there's other things I want to do besides fight. I'm getting restless. I want to travel."

He took a trip to Hollywood recently to audition for the Versus boxing reality show "The Contender." Show producers had heard about Robles' story and invited him out. He lasted two days.

"I gathered they thought my attitude would cause conflict for the show," he said.

One of the concerns producers had was about fighting among contestants away from the ring, Robles said. He was asked what he would do if, say, one of the contestants tried to take his finger necklace.

"I said I would cut their finger off and use that as a necklace," Robles said.

Shockingly, Robles isn't the only athlete who recently decided that his pinky finger was expendable.

Trevor Wikre is a senior at Mesa State College and is the starting right guard for the Mavericks offensive line and Wikre is not about to let a dislocated pinky end his college football playing career.

Wikre suffered a compound dislocation of his right pinky finger in the Mavs win over Fort Lewis last Saturday and was sent to the hospital for immediate medical attention. When doctors told Wikre that he would be sidelined for the remainder of the season he was devastated.

His doctors told him that they would have to operate and insert pins into the finger to help the bone and joint heal correctly. But that wasn't an option for the Mavs offensive lineman. He told doctors to amputate the finger so he could continue his football career on the field and not on the sidelines.

Juan is a big teddy bear. Nicest guy i know. The video of the finger is sick. We watched it a hundred times one night in slowmo after he did it. Too bad about contender though, he would have punished.

I thought the contender was looking for fighters? all their looking for is a star, they lost both by not choosing juan.

Juan is a great guy, great boxer. Contender have not given a true Champion a chance.

Now he is not in the show it won't be worth watching.

 KEEP FIGHTING JUAN.
